President Obama’s Commitment to Education
The other day, I found myself cheering at the television. I wasn’t watching basketball. I was tuned in to President Obama’s Address to Congress.
Go ahead, call me Pollyanna. I’m not going to pretend that I wasn’t ecstatic after hearing the President call upon us to read to the children in our lives. And I was delighted to hear him set a U.S. goal of leading the world in highest proportion of college graduates by 2020.
I spend most of my time thinking about college admission so it’s not surprising that I’m more vocal about my views on education than most. But why aren’t more people talking about this? I know our top priority is the state of our economy but it isn’t our only priority.
Isn’t this an opportune time to rally around a cause to distract us from the daily doom and gloom news reports? I remember that day not so long ago when we rushed out in record numbers to vote. What would it look like if got “fired up” about educating our nation’s children? We don’t need a special program or government permission to get started. Let’s set a personal goal right now! Imagine our country 10 years from now if each adult mentored one child. That would be something to talk about.
